Music and Worship at First Baptist Church, Kenner
At FBC, worship is not about a style or a feeling; it is about celebrating a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, the numerous and continued blessings of our loving heavenly Father, and the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. When we come together to worship we sing songs that reflect the work of the triune God. Sometimes they are celebrative, sometimes reflective, sometimes prayerful; but they are always meaningful. We are a congregation that loves to sing its testimony to the world.
We are led in worship by our Sanctuary Choir and our Sanctuary Orchestra. These combined groups meet once a week to practice their leadership role. This is their primary responsibility. The songs that are sung in a worship service become the voice of the entire congregation.
Our children and young people also lead us in worship by playing instruments and singing on a regular basis. This is part of our ministry responsibility to train up the next generation of worshipers. We encourage this participation from our younger members. As part of this ministry we host the Musical Arts Centre to train children (and some adults) in music performance.
In all of these opportunities to utilize music in worship our main purpose is captured in the phrase – “Soli Deo Gloria” – to God alone be the glory!
Our Sanctuary Choir is a primary leadership group in our corporate worship experiences. This group of dedicated singers meets once a week to practice for their important role. Whether singing anthems, hymns, or praise songs, our goal is to be prepared musically so that there will be no distraction to the message and intent of the song that we sing. In fact, we practice all the music that will be offered in a worship service for which we are leading. This makes it more meaningful for us when we participate with the entire congregation during a Sunday service.
The Choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7:00-8:15 p.m. Our singers represent all age groups from age 16 to senior saints. We are a mirror of the worshiping congregation at FBC. If you love to sing and love to work hard at progressing as a singer, come and join us in this vital ministry. Please contact Gail Smith in the church office for more information.
The congregation at FBC, Kenner loves instrumental music. We have been blessed by a group of talented musicians that lead us in worship every week. Our group rehearses every week for their role in leading our church in worship and for participation in special and seasonal events.
The orchestra rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 6:15-7:15 p.m. Part of rehearsal time is spent with our Sanctuary Choir so we can practice for our roles in worship leadership. If you play an instrument and have at least some high school experience playing in band or orchestra, we would love to have you join us in our ministry. Please contact Julie McKeever in the church office for more information.
